Thunderkick are well known for their imaginative and fun high-quality 3D video slots and Babushkas Slot is no exception. The choice of theme might surprise you when you see Russian traditional dolls, Babushkas, as main characters.
Colourful dolls will pop out before your eyes and bring you more money thanks to new Symbol Upgrade feature, while the Bear will amuse you dancing to Russian folk beat and bringing you Free Spins and Wilds across 5 reels and 17 paylines.
What We Love
We love the way how Thunderkick approaches each theme with just the right dose of humour and innovation, not to mention the superb quality when it comes to graphics.
But what we loved the most in this game is the Symbol Upgrade feature. Very cleverly thought out and obviously inspired by the original design of the dolls this feature allows for matching symbols to transform into higher paying categories. The Babushkas are divided into categories from 0-6, that is to say, from the oldest to the youngest.
The oldest and highest paying one is grandma, while the biggest and lowest paying one is the baby. If you land a winning combo of any of the Babushkas the matching symbols might be upgraded to a higher category if there are surrounding symbols which form additional winning combinations.
This can go all the way to 0 categories, the yellow grandma, which is upgraded into a ghost (there is that Swedish wittiness and humour) and then Wipe and Win option is activated which means that you stand to win hefty payouts.
Also we really liked the character of the Bear who jumps out of a Wild egg (that is if the egg is marked with a star) and activates Bonus features. Depending on the type of the bear you can get upgrades of your symbols or free spins with stacked Wilds.
Last but not the least, the idea of adding a jackpot to the story was just the right move, as the game definitely needs something to attract more demanding players and 390x Jackpot might do the trick.
What We Do Not Like
Overall we have no major remarks to this game, except maybe that there could be more paylines. Perhaps they cut short on the paylines because of the Symbol Upgrade feature, but all the same we would prefer if it had more. Also, the RTP is slightly lower than what we are used to from this developer. It is around 96%.
Perhaps you are not a fan of Russian music or Russian knitwear, but even so there is definitely more to this game. We find Thunderkick’s wittiness and humour in each slot a guarantee of good fun and when you add to this that the special features offer plenty of opportunities to win with Symbol Upgrade in the base game, Free Spins and stacked Wilds in Bonus rounds and finally the Jackpot.
Surely, high-rollers might not find the low payout appealing but the jackpot could satisfy some appetites. Having considered all the pros and cons, we believe that you should not miss out on Russian action.
