Avoid the Wolf’s Jaws in NetEnt’s Newest Release

fairytale-legends-red-riding-hoodFairyTale Legends: Red Riding Hood is a game based on a fairytale which we believe almost everyone has heard of. Developed by the industry veteran NetEnt, it brings with it just about everything you’d expect – high graphical quality, good sound design and a fitting musical theme, a wide variety of spin options and a flexibility for both low and high rollers.

The game does have an odd sense of confused identity as it mixes up it’s theme with several other fairytales. While it has it’s flaws, is it enough to bring the game down, or does it have a happily ever after? Let’s find out.

What We Love

The slot visuals take the centre stage and there’s simply no going around that. The graphics are fantastic, you will see different colour changes, dimming, symbols glowing as they’re flipped into other icons, and the background itself actually moves each time you spin rather than remaining a fixed image. As if that wasn’t enough, the game also brings the high quality polish to it’s minigame, Beware the Wolf, which feels like an outright board game.

With the minimum coin value at $0.01 and the maximum you could bet going up to $200, you’re given flexibility on just how much you want to offer for each spin, giving a flexible arrangement that benefits both people with plenty of money to burn and those that just want a cheap, entertaining slot to spin from time to time. NetEnt continues to deliver on this, and we’re happy to see it persist.

The sheer amount of Specials the game features is wide, and all the bonuses they offer are amazing. Special features are delivered through a magical fairy, and at least three locked boxes. The fairy offers you a magic spin which transforms a large portion of the reels into one icon, the Fairy surprise which can save your losing spin into a winning on by exchanging icons, and the Wild Spin which places sticky Wilds on the reels which persist for several spins.

But if that’s not enough, the locked boxes offer three more specials. One is an instant credit boost which is a solid win, but somewhat boring, the free spins that allow you to play more and earn more free spins, and the Beware the Wolf, which offers you a minigame to play for higher winnings.

What We Do Not like

The slot seems to have an issue with mixed identity. The fairy special, the icons being generic themed fairytale symbols rather than related to the story itself point to either a lack of knowledge of the source material, or just a lack of desire to fully embrace it. Regardless, we feel if your main theme centres on a specific fairytale, embrace it to the fullest, or not at all.

The lock boxes specials are entirely RNG in what you receive. Rather than offer you a choice, the game just picks for you. Even if your choice was entirely random, we feel player choice should always be prioritised for higher enjoyment.

Despite some faults, the slot does remain an enjoyable thing to play, especially considering the variety of bonuses and the great graphics that it offers. With varied bet levels and a whole mini-game added on top of the existing slot, there is a lot going for NetEnt’s newest release. We give it a thumbs up and hope it finds it’s way to success without the wolf snatching it up along the way.
