So here we have it again. The federal government trying to control what you use your hard earned money for.
"Doesn't the federal government have better things to do than try to block people from going online to make a wager on the Super Bowl or play online poker after hard days work?"
This proposed Goodlatte's bill for anti-internet gaming (bill H.R. 4411), also conveniently leaves out horse racing, and lotteries-so it would be okay to gamble online on horse racing but online poker will get banned - what an insane bill! .
Their sights are set on internet gaming specifically and even within the bill, there is wording to prosecute online gamblers. This is an archaic attempt by ultra-conservative group within the government.
But more to the point, here we have a western nation which in reference to this H.R. 4411 bill, is actually travelling back in time. It is a fact that more and more countries are opening up to controlled online gambling. Over 80 countries worldwide including the UK, are starting to legalized and regulated online casinos and online poker. And within 6 months there will be more added to that impressive list.
A big loser from this bill, if passed, will be land based casinos.
If US land based casinos do not act now, the US land based casinos will lose big time in the long run. Europe is right now in the process of making online casino gambling legal in Europe, and USA land based casinos could be left behind if they do not act now also Horse racing and lotteries will have huge advantage over land based casinos because Horse racing will be able take online bets and land based casinos will not be allowed.
"Congress should be clarifying the law in the opposite direction. Legalizing online gambling and regulating the industry ? as Britain has done ? is the best way to toughen protections against gambling by minors, identify problem gamblers.
According to a recent big Wall Street Journal Poll, 85% of US citizens polled were against a Congressional ban on online gambling maybe Congress should listen to the public and
should become a co-sponsor of H.R. 5474 instead. This bill requires Congress to objectively examine how Internet gambling can be regulated and taxed rather than driven underground.
Americans know that prohibitions don't work. Congress should ensure that we can continue to enjoy poker on the Internet in a safe and regulated environment and not make the same mistake.
Telling American adults how to use their hard-earned money, whether on e-bay or on playing internet poker or online casinos is not the federal government's job.
