The 45 year old owner of Newcastle United Football club surprised onlookers and players alike when he bet a sum of £480,000 in a series of bets that were around his lucky number 17.

Mr. Ashley, who is ranked to be Britain’s 54th richest man, won the large sum while laying a complicated bet called complete.

In this betting combination he placed money on every number including 17. His luck was on his side as the roulette ball fell on it.

An onlooker said, “The winner’s chips surrounded the winning number in every possible way. His win was cheered and clapped by spectators."

Mr. Ashley won the sum while playing at the Fifty London casino in Mayfair. He had bet a total of $480,000 on the day when he won the large sum.

The winner, who also formerly owned the Sports Direct retail chain, spent just a total of 15 minutes at the casino, after he had won the sum.

According to another witness, when Ashley saw that he had won the large amount, he told the croupier, “thanks for the help and finishing my play”. Having said that he collected his amount and walked out of the club.

Ashley is often seen sporting shirt number 17 when he goes to watch Newcastle United play. He left school at the age of 16 to start a retail chain of sports and ski shops in London. Last year he bought Newcastle United for £135 million
