Online Casino Advertising Restricted

Beginning September 1, 2007, the UK will be restricting online casino advertising for companies based outside of Europe and Gibraltar, unless they apply to the government in order to advertise their products.

British Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, believes that a ban on websites run by companies with poor regulation, would secure online gamblers from crime and exploitation.

The announcement was made as the government-appointment Casino Advisory Panel prepares to announce today its recommendation for the citing of the UK's first super-casino.

Jowell plans to lay out the timetable and procedure for the government to respond to the recommendation, leading to a vote of MP's.

Under the 2005 Gambling Act, the legalization of online gambling and deregulation of casinos are part of a series of measures that have been voted through.

The UK Gambling Act regulates advertising for bookmakers and casino operators, but those companies based outside of Europe or Gibraltar wishing to advertise, will have to prove that their licensing regimes deter crime, and ensure that gambling is fair.

Jowell has instructed officials to set procedures that push companies to contribute a levy to the Responsibility in Gambling Trust, in order to help problem gamblers.

Conservative MP and chairman of the Trust, John Greenway, said, "The main problem is that we are dependent on people making a voluntary contribution. There is some concern (from online gambling companies) about the costs of implementing the Gambling Act."
