There are now three big names interested in the prospect of building a new gambling complex in Toronto. First Wynn and MGM expressed their interest in the idea, and no Las Vegas Sands has decided to get in on the action. According to a new report in the Globe and Mail, the company has been exploring potential sites all over the Greater Toronto Area.
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is dedicated to providing support for local Olympic athletes, and does so through its Quest for Gold program. This year, the OLG is excitedly cheering on the athletes which received support from the program and are now competition in the London 2012 Olympics.
William Hill is one of the largest sportsbetting operators in the United Kingdom, but the company has had its eye on the American market for quite some time. The operator has purchase three Nevada-based sportsbooks and has just finalized a deal with Bet Smart Media, a Canadian gaming company, which help to solidify William’s Hill place in the North American gambling market.
Ira Rubin is well-known for his role in processing payments for the three online gambling websites indicted on Black Friday. He is one of 11 individuals who had been arrested for the part he played in the debacle, and he is the first to receive his sentencing. This week, the American Supreme Court sentenced Rubin to three years in jail for processing online gambling transactions for PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker.
When Ontario Place was shut down earlier this year, local politicians believed that the former amusement park should be made into a gambling complex much like the Las Vegas Strip. The idea was thrown around for the past six months, but that pipe dream will not come to fruition as a report on Ontario Place’s redevelopment does not include plans for a casino.
In Kingston, the topic of casino gambling is a heated one. The city is very much on the fence when it comes to deciding whether or not a casino should be built. A decision has been made to host a council meeting to discuss the issue of bringing casino gambling to Kingston; however, it has not been well-received by many local politicians.
The London Olympics are starting shortly and bookies are getting ready to handle millions of dollars’ worth of wagers. This year will be the busiest Olympics for both online and land-based sportsbooks, as a number of factors encourage even more betting activity this time around.
The time is now – Zynga has finally decided to launch a real-money online poker application. After months of speculation, the popular social gaming company is ready to take the leap – and several well-known gaming operators are jumping at the chance to assist.
The last instalment of the Dark Knight series has hit theatres this weekend, filling movie theatre seats with comic book fans and movie buffs. To celebrate the launch of the film, Microgaming has released an online slots game based on the series – and it has seen a great deal of success recently.
You’d think the online gaming community would be past prejudiced and sexual harassment. The cloak of anonymity that the internet provides should put everyone on an even playing-field – but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Recent reports have shown that female online gamers are being abused by their male counterparts, and women are now speaking out against it.
Over a year ago, PokerStars was one of three websites indicted on Black Friday. Along with Full Tilt and Absolute Poker, PokerStars was charged with running an illegal online gambling operation, which forced the company out of the American gaming market. Now, PokerStars has filed a claim, hoping that the American Department of Justice will dismiss the charges.
Last year, when the American Department of Justice announced that running online gambling websites is not technically illegal, federal lawmakers jumped at the chance to pass online poker legislation. While plenty of states have attempted to launch their own online gambling websites (and a few have been successful), federal lawmakers are still committed to legalizing the activity nation-wide.
As far as celebrity poker players go, Roberto Luongo fared well in this year’s WSOP Main Event. Sponsored by the BCLC’s PlayNow.com, Luongo’s $10 000 was covered by the online gambling site – and he certainly did them proud. While finishing in 642nd place does not sound impressive, he beat out over 6000 of his peers, earning almost $20 000 in prize money.
Amazon.com is one of the world’s premier destinations for entertainment in the online world. You can purchase just about any book, movie or video game from the website. So, it would seem only natural for the company to venture into the online gaming market – and that is exactly what it has done. The new Game Connect Service from Amazon offers a new way for players to take part in all types of online games.
Earlier this week, it was announced that Raymond Bitar was unlikely to be released from jail, but those predictions have been proven false. After his bail was increased from $250 000 to $2.5 million (with $1 million required to be paid in cash), it did not seem as though Bitar would be walking the streets anytime soon. However, that has not been the case, leaving prosecutors concerned that he may skip town once again.
An issue that is becoming increasingly prevalent in Canadian society is that of underage gambling. Young people under the age of 18 are now getting involved in an activity that is reserved for adults, and a new program from the McGill Centre seeks to discourage them from doing so.

Now, PokerStars is adding another location to its internationally-renowned tournament schedule, announcing that it will be the new sponsor of the Brazilian Series of Poker.
The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has worked hard over the course of the past year to launch a successful online gambling website. Despite a few hiccups at the initial launch, PlayNow.com has thrived in British Columbia’s gaming market. Now, the BCLC is looking to take this show on the road, as it considers exporting its online gambling system for other provinces to use.
